CANU convinced cocaine was placed in rice in Guyana

Officials of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) believe that the cocaine which was discovered in a shipment of rice from Guyana which was busted in the Dominican Republic, was placed in the shipment in Guyana.

The shipment was busted on its way to Venezuela as part of the Guyana rice deal with the neighbouring state. Reports indicate that before the shipment arrived in the Dominican Republic, there was a stop in Jamaica.

Guyana Law Enforcement officials now want to know how the drug laden rice shipment was able to sneak past the container scanning system which is operated by the Guyana Revenue Authority at the local wharf. Sources at the GRA have told News Source that the scanning system has been down for over four months and there is no clear indication as to when it will once again become operational.

The source explained that although containers are being passed under the scanner, “the scanner is down and has been down for a while, so the officers cannot see anything. It’s just not working”.

News Source made several attempts on Thursday and Friday to get a comment from the Head of the Guyana Revenue Authority Khurshid Sattaur on the issue. He was not available for comment.

There are also reports that the rice shipments that are a part of the petro caribe deal are not usually subjected to scans.

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit is continuing to investigate the drug bust in the Dominican Republic along with the officials from that island. Over 140 pounds of cocaine was found in the shipment of the rice from the Guyana Rice Development Board.
