CANU releases super bike racer as probe continues into cocaine bust

Popular super bike racer, Stephen Vieira, has been released from the custody of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, but remains under investigation as the probe continues into the $550 million cocaine bust at Zeelugt.

Vieira who was in the country at the time of the bust, had travelled to Jamaica via Suriname and Trinidad, one day after the bust was made.

But returned to Guyana late last week and was arrested on arrival at the Cheddi Jagan Airport.

A wanted bulletin had been issued for his arrest. That bulletin has since been recalled following his arrest and questioning.

He was questioned about the shipment of timber that was found with the cocaine in dug out pallets. Vieira’s name was found on several of the shipping documents.

CANU is still seeking the whereabouts of the owner of the sawmill where the shipment was prepared.

The man, Narine Lall, is believed to be out of the country.

A number of other persons have been questioned and released. They all have to make regular visits to the CANU headquarters as the probe continues.
