Caribbean Airlines applies for regular service to Ogle

With uncertainty hanging over the return of LIAT, Caribbean Airlines continues its expansion into many of the markets that were being served by LIAT.

Officials of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority have confirmed that Caribbean Airlines has applied for a license for schedule services between Port of Spain and the Ogle Airport in Guyana and Bridgetown and Ogle.

A senior official of the GCAA told News Source today that the application is under review.

Once Caribbean Airlines gets approval, which is likely, it will operate its ATR 72-600 aircraft which could carry up to 68 passengers. It is the same model that was being used by LIAT.

The schedule services are expected to be daily. Trinidad and Tobago’s Piarco Airport remains closed to international flights and is likely to remain closed until the end of August.

The airports in Guyana are set to begin the first phase of a reopening plan soon.

Caribbean Airlines previously operated a number of flights to Ogle using the same ATR planes two years ago when there was expansion work being done at the Cheddi Jagan Airport. That service was temporary.

Up until the closure of the airports across the region because of the Coronavirus pandemic, LIAT operated two daily flights between Ogle and Bridgetown and one daily flight between Port-of-Spain and Ogle.

NEWS Source understands that LIAT is still to officially inform the authorities in Guyana about its future plans.

The shareholder governments of LIAT have been locked in engagements on the future of the airline, which has been facing financial turbulence for several years.

While some of the shareholder governments want to completely liquidate the airline, the Government of Antigua has put together a restructuring plan.
