CARICOM blasts outgoing US Administration over designation of Cuba as sponsor of terrorism

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has denounced what it calls, the unilateral declaration by the outgoing United States administration to designate Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism.

In a statement, CARICOM said Cuba’s international conduct does not in any way warrant that designation.

CARICOM accused the outgoing Trump administration of further attacking Cuba which will affect the country’s international standing and its social, human and economic development.

The move by the US government, CARICOM said, is another misguided action in addition to the unproductive, unnecessary and illegal financial and economic embargo already imposed on the Caribbean nation by the United States.

CARICOM has now issued a call for the immediate review and reversal of the “unjustified actions taken in regard to Cuba and looks forward to the United States moving towards normalising relations with Cuba.”

CARICOM Secretary General Ambassador Irwin LaRoque

Outgoing US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the latest US government decision against Cuba last week.

The move caught many in the international community by surprise and has been seen as a last ditch effort by the Trump administration to create more tension with the communist country that has been making moves to better its relations with the US.
