Residents in the mining community of Mahdia in Region Eight, are being encouraged to take all necessary precautions as flood waters remain in the community following more than 12 hours of heavy rainfall.

Overnight and early morning showers have seen the overflowing of the Mahdia creek and the flood waters quickly moving through the community.  A number of homes and businesses are inundated with water, but an ease in the heavy rainfall is expected to see some relief in the flooding.

Regional Executive Officer for the Region, Gavin Dounga, is quoted by the Department of Information as saying that the situation is expected to return to some level of normalcy by midnight, once the rains continue to hold.

At his post-cabinet press briefing this morning, Minister of State, Joe Harmon, said the Civil Defence Commission is monitoring the situation and will brief him later today.

He said relief stations are close by and the CDC stands ready to move in to offer help.

Some residents in the community have been left shocked by the flooding, saying that this is the first they have seen such flooding in the community.
