Chicken smugglers ordered to pay $5.7M or face jail time

Three men who were charged last year with the smuggling of foreign chicken have been found guilty of the crime and ordered to pay $5.7 million to the Guyana Revenue Authority or face one year in prison.

The Magistrate at the Sparendaam Court handed down the decision yesterday and gave the convicts one week to pay over the money or face jail time.

The three men, Jimmy Ferguson, Anthonio Robertson and Sohan Beisabhan were nabbed in August 2019 with the uncustomed product. They had 200 40-pound boxes of chicken in their possession that was smuggled from neighbouring Suriname.

The case was prosecuted by the Guyana Revenue Authority, as it continues its efforts to clamp down on smuggling.
