China and Guyana cooperation will bear more fruit -says Chinese Ambassador

Guyana and China are celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations and with Guyana eyeing more infrastructural development in the coming years as it becomes a major player in oil and gas, the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana believes, the country now sits as a hotbed for investment.

During a reception to mark the golden anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, Ambassador Guo Haiyan said China remains committed to cooperation with Guyana in development and other areas.

“We believe that the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Guyana will bear more fruit and bring more tangible benefits to both counties and their peoples. China-Guyana cooperation is open cooperation and we believe that Guyana is a hotbed of investment with fair competition and we are happy to see the diversification of Guyana’s international partners”, the Chinese Ambassador said.

The Ambassador was recently forced to defend Chinese investment in Guyana after a Chinese businessman who has operated in Guyana for years made allegations in an undercover US TV Network investigation that for investors to benefit from government contracts in Guyana, bribes have to be paid.

The businessman named the Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo as a Government official allegedly involved in corruption and the acceptance of bribes. The Vice President has denied the claim while admitting that not only was he close friends with the businessman who made the claim, but the man also rented a house from him.

The Chinese Ambassador in a statement said the exposé by the US network was planned to cast a shadow and interfere with the relations between Guyana and China.

President Irfaan Ali told the reception last evening that relations between the two countries are strong and have been developing.

“Relations between Guyana and the People’s Republic of China are based on the principles of the United Nations Charter, respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, our shared ties of blood and history, the pursuit of external relations and common interest. These relations are underscored by the One China policy. Relations between Guyana and the People’s Republic of China are imperishable. The inseparable ties with China have brought tremendous development gains and have brought our people closer together”, President Ali said.

In early 2021, Guyana was rebuked by the Chinese Government over a failed move to establish a Taiwan trade office in Guyana. The move was announced by the US Government, triggering diplomatic tension at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in both Guyana and China.

The move was seen as going against the One China policy and Guyana was forced to backtrack on the move after a phone call from the Chinese President and concerns that the setting up of relations with Taiwan could damage Guyana’s relationship with China.

Since then, Guyana has moved to assure China of its commitment to the relations between the two countries.

China sees Taiwan as a runaway providence that must be reunited with the mainland.
