The Mayor and Councillors of Georgetown have decided to launch a public awareness campaign in light of the current situation at the municipality with two acting Town Clerks, one appointed by the Local Government Minister and the other put in place by the City Council itself.
The Mayor and City Councillors at an extraordinary meeting last week voted to appoint Public Relations Officer Royston King as the new acting Town Clerk but the acting Town Clerk who was put in place by the Minister of Local Government is refusing to demit office and has declared that the efforts to unseat her are illegal.
The Local Government Minister has also declared his support for Sooba as the acting Town Clerk even as the High Court in a ruling declared that the Minister of Local Government could not be making appointments at City Hall.
In a half page notice in today’s newspapers and signed by Royston King as the acting Town Clerk, the City Council said it has found it necessary to begin a process of public awareness for all citizens of Georgetown.
The public relations drive is expected to examine several issues related to the operation of the City Council and the responsibilities of various officers and offices.
While highlighting council by laws, the city council notice said “it is clear that the Mayor and City Council is the authority who determines who should sign off on its vouchers and cheques.”. It further stated that “no other person, even the Minister of Local Government, has the authority to instruct the bank on matters concerning council’s accounts”.
The Mayor and Councillors have written to the bank changing the names that would have access to the finances of the Georgetown City Council. The Minister had moved to the same banks to instruct them that they ought to ignore the letter from the City Council and that the acting Town Clerk that he put in place.
