Facing a backlash over not finalizing all arrangements for the relocation of Stabroek square vendors before moving them, the Georgetown City Council is now in a rush to have the large plot of land on Hadfield Street properly prepared within the next 24hrs.

The vendors have been protesting against the council’s failure to have the land properly prepared for them before effecting their removal.

Town Clerk, Royston King was at the site today overlooking the preparation works and he told News Source that when the works are completed within the next 24 hours, vendors should be pleased with their new temporary location.

“We are preparing this site and we will install security lights, we will install compactors to deal with the garbage, we will also put sanitary facilities here and we also want to put in place removable and collapsible tents to ensure a certain standard of operation here for vending”, he said.

He also explained that the City Council will provide full security for the area.

The Town Clerk said the Council will not allow vendors to go back to the area outside the Stabroek Market since plans are afoot to keep the area clean and clear, while providing a new and improved environment in the area. The Council is examining other areas close by for the permanent relocation of the vendors.

With regard to the mini-bus park that has also been moved out, Mr. King said that a relocation is likely to be prepared for that particular park also as the Council moves to ensure less congestion in the area.

The City Council started its clean up of the downtown area on Sunday. Vendors launched their protest action on Tuesday calling for the government to get involved in the issue.

Georgetown Mayor, Patricia Chase-Green said there is a need to beautify the city and the council was in consultation for a long time with vendors in its efforts to have them removed from the area.
