Despite not being able to fulfill all the promises made during the last elections, the People’s National Congress Reform, which is part of the coalition government, has expressed satisfaction with those promises that have been kept.

Executive Member of the PNCR, Aubrey Norton admitted today that no political party delivers all of the promises they make, but he said the PNCR has made serious efforts in making sure that most of the promises it made were delivered to the people of Guyana.  

“The PNCR is satisfied that with the resources at its disposal, and here we talk about the same resources that the PPP (People’s Progress Party) had, we have delivered a lot of services. But they are things that we didn’t deliver what we promised,” he said Friday at the party’s weekly press conference.

Norton said if Guyanese take a look at the drainage and irrigation system now, and compare the money the PPP spent with what the current government spent, the result today is far more superior.

“We promised Guyanese at the last election that we will deliver on water. We didn’t give all the communities and we can’t in four years. But it’s a fact that many of the communities that the PPP did not give any water to, we delivered. Look at Farm and parts of Linden,” he added.

Another promise delivered by the APNU+AFC coalition is to improve maternal health, according to Norton. “We promised to improve maternal deaths. We have taken action and there has been a marked reduction in maternal deaths today,” he boasted.

Shifting his attention to another area, the PNCR executive said the promise to reduce crime was also delivered. He said anyone who is reasonable, will accept that they can walk more freely in Guyana.

“We haven’t solved crime. Nobody could solve it in four years…The crime basically has been reduced. We are not saying there is no crime. Any reasonable Guyanese will accept there are less gun crimes now and rarely you are hearing about crime with machine guns,” he added.

With these promises already delivered, Norton said Government has taken steps to also improve the investigative capacity of the Guyana Police Force (GFPF) and professionalizing the Force through training and other initiatives implemented under the government.  

“So if you commit murder or any crime there is a higher probability now that you will be caught. We are professionalizing the police force…it is not there as yet. Every police force will have bad bags and where it became necessary many of them have been removed…I am saying to you that we delivered on the law and order promise.”

In addition to that Norton said the current government has also delivered on better quality roads and revitalizing the cattle industry in the Rupununi region, among others.
