Coalition writes GECOM on concerns about using old voters’ list for LGE

The Opposition APNU+AFC has written to the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission expressing some concern about the Commission moving ahead with preparations for local elections without a new registration period.

During a press conference today, Mr. Harmon said the Elections Commission appears to be heading to another Claims and Objections period without the proper cleansing of the voters’ list.

He said the concerns about the list were behind the Commission’s request for a meeting with the Chairman.

The Chairman of the Elections Commission Justice Claudette Singh has said the APNU+AFC should meet with the entire Commission and not just the Chairman.

Harmon said the Opposition wanted to engage with the Chair of the Commission to remind her of the entities that came to observe Guyana’s elections in 2020 and the views they expressed relative to the list. He referenced the CARICOM Review team, OAS and Commonwealth which all highlighted the need to fix the list.

The Opposition has now written to a number of international organisations expressing its concern about the Commission’s move to head into local elections without adequately addressing the concerns about the list.

“We are not just any other entity, we are the APNU+AFC and so the Chairman should understand that and what that means. She cannot just be meeting with people who come from overseas and all over and you can’t meet with us, we take umbrage to that position and we will communicate it in due time, again to the Chairman what our position is with respect to her refusal to meet with the APNU+AFC”, Harmon stated.
