Cocaine busted in 40 ft container of charcoal at SilverHill

Acting on intelligence information, members of the Container Control Programme and the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit moved in to a charcoal mining area at Silver Hill on the Linden Soesdyke Highway and busted a large quantity of cocaine among hundreds of bags of charcoal that was being prepared for shipment.

The bust was made on Tuesday midday and up to Tuesday afternoon, agents were still going through the hundred of bags of charcoal in the 40 ft. container.

The Head of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, James Singh confirmed to News Source that the charcoal producer who is a known shipper and exporter of charcoal has been arrested and remains in custody.

Some of the cocaine was discovered in the bags of charcoal that were packed into the container.

Agents are looking at several other persons who may be linked to the shipment. The unit which carried out the charcoal cocaine bust is the same unit that found more than 400 pounds of cocaine in a container on a ship at Linden in January.

Investigations are ongoing with support from international drug enforcement agencies.  (File Photo)
