A local Chef who was nabbed with cocaine pellets in his stomach, will be spending the next three years in jail after pleading guilty to cocaine trafficking.

26-year-old, Anthony Gibson, of East Ruimveldt, poured out tears after the sentence was handed down in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.

Gibson was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking at the Cheddi Jagan Airport last week as he prepared to board a flight to The Bahamas. When he was questioned, he admitted to the authorities that he had ingested cocaine pellets.

He told investigators that he had ingested a total of 35 cocaine pellets. But after he was taken to a hospital and kept under close watch, he eventually passed out 52 pellets, weighing 548 grammes in total.

While fighting back tears today, the cocaine carrying chef, told the magistrate that he turned to cocaine trafficking because he needed to take care of his girlfriend and their son.

He said an injury to one of his arms, forced him to put his culinary skills on the back burner. He claimed that a man, who he only knew as Jermaine, gave him the cocaine pellets to take to The Bahamas, with a promise of cash payments.

By the time his tears dried, the Magistrate made known the three year sentence and also fined him $1.4 million.
