Construction worker seriously injured by electric shock at building site

The Labour Department is investigating another workplace accident that occurred in the city today.

This morning, 43-year-old construction worker Leon Turpin was badly burnt at his worksite after receiving several electrical shocks about his body.

Reports suggest that the man was moving a metal pole when it came into contact with a live wire at the high rise building on Regent Street.

A report from the Guyana Power and Light Company said the incident resulted in damage to the electrical system in the area, resulting in a number of communities across the city facing a power outage.

The injured construction worker was taken to the Georgetown Hospital where he was treated for severe burns to parts of his arms and upper body.

There have been a number of work related accidents in the past year. Though the labour department reported that work place deaths have been on the decline, it still expressed worry about the number of incidents.
