Coronavirus victims moved to quarantine facility; No more self-quarantine

The three family members from the East Coast of Demerara who tested positive for the coronavirus have been moved to one of the four quarantine facilities set up by the Ministry of Public Health and will have to remain there until they overcome the virus.

The three are related to the first coronavirus victim who died last week at the Georgetown hospital.

A decision was made yesterday to move all three of the victims to mandatory quarantine after reports surfaced that they were not following advice for self-quarantine.

Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence told a media briefing this afternoon that four quarantine sites have been set up for coronavirus victims and moving forward anyone who tests positive for the coronavirus will face mandatory quarantine instead of self-quarantine at home.

The Minister said the Ministry has no plans to release information about which quarantine site the three current cases are being housed, because of the importance to protect the rights of the patient.

She said the government will continue to put systems in place to fight the coronavirus. The total number of cases in Guyana remains at four. However, there have been other suspected cases.

Lawrence also announced today that more testing kits are being sourced through the World Health Organisation for Guyana. Those additional testing kits will be sent to the country soon.

The Ministry of Public Health is encouraging persons to follow the strict guidelines to guard against the coronavirus. Citizens are being reminded that they should cut back on social gatherings and should also santize their surroundings regularly while washing their hands with soap before and after various tasks.
