Cotton Tree villager in custody over murder of teen cousins

A 57-year-old villager from Cotton Tree on the West Coast of Berbice has been arrested as the Police continue their probe into the brutal slaying of two teenaged cousins from #3 village in the same West Coast Berbice area.

The Guyana Police Force in a short statement confirmed the arrest but offered no other details.

The Sunday night statement from the Police came as protesters blocked the main roads through a number of West Coast Berbice villages demanding justice for the teens.

The lifeless bodies of 16-year-old Isaiah Henry and 18-year-old Joel Henry were found this afternoon in Cotton Tree backdam with multiple slashes to their necks and bodies. One of the teens was slashed across the head and face, leaving the markings of an “X”.

The two cousins went missing on Saturday when they left their home to pick coconuts in the Cotton Tree backdam area.

Their family became worried on Saturday evening when they did not return home and a search party was launched.

This morning, more villagers joined the searches and they stumbled on the bodies of the Henry cousins this afternoon, sending shockwaves through their home communities.

Persons who were on the scene described the double murder as barbaric and said they have never seen anything like it.

Police investigators continue to probe the murder while additional ranks are keeping their eyes on the protests that have erupted in the communities.
