COVID-19 deaths climb to 754; Over 5,300 new cases recorded in 24 days

Guyana confirmed five more COVID-19 deaths on Saturday, pushing the country’s COVID-19 death toll to 754.

The month of September is the deadliest month for the pandemic so far with 129 deaths recorded in 25 days.

Most of the deaths, according to the Ministry of Health, have been among unvaccinated people.

The Health Ministry is now pushing for more persons to get vaccinated. About 73% of Guyana’s adult population has received the first dose of one of the COVID-19 vaccines while only 38% of the adult population is fully vaccinated, having received their first and second dose.

Health officials are also worried about the virus spreading at an alarming rate across the country and in every region with Regions 3 and 4 accounting for more than 80% of the new cases.

Since the start of September, 5,359 new cases of the virus have been recorded, making September the month with the widest spread and the highest increase in new cases of the virus.

The Health Ministry has warned that there are hotspots in a number of communities especially in Regions 3 and 4.

The Government continues to come under criticism for its handling of the pandemic, with the opposition People’s National Congress calling on the Health Minister to step up his fight against the virus or step aside from the position.
