COVID-19 Hospitalisations on the rise; Region 4 hotspots identified

There are 76 persons hospitalized with COVID-19 across the country with 59 of those in the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Lilliendaal.

Of the 59 persons who are at the Covid-19 hospital, 15 are receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and are being assisted with their breathing, according to Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony.

The Minister said Region Four continues to lead in both confirmed cases and deaths, and in recent weeks, there has been a spike in the virus in several communities across the region.

“In Region 4, there are some areas that we have seen persistent cases. So, on the East Bank, we have had for several weeks now cases in Diamond, Herstelling, and Eccles. In Georgetown, we have seen cases in Kitty, Campbellville, part of South Ruimveldt and on the East Coast we have seen in Good Hope, Lusignan area that we are getting a number of cases”, the Health Minister pointed out.

He also explained that while those areas might be hotspots, there are other cases across the region.

“We want people to understand that this is a very serious disease because we have seen a rise in cases especially in region 4 and we have also seen an increase in hospitalization, and I am sure everybody is seeing that we are getting more deaths.”

Dr. Anthony is urging citizens to follow all COVID-19 protocols. He said those who are eligible for vaccination should get the jab.

Health workers, he said, could find it difficult to manage patients if the numbers continue to rise.
