COVID-19 Recoveries climb to 84 with only 1 new case in 7 days

Four more persons have made full recoveries from the coronavirus disease in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of recovered cases to 84.

In its release today, the Public Health Ministry revealed that there were no new cases recorded in the past 24 hours. The country recorded only one new case in the past 7 days.

But citizens are being encouraged not to become complacent as it appears the country is finally flattening the curve.

Director of Primary Health Care Services, Dr. Ertensia Hamilton today said there are still 58 active cases with two of those cases in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit.

“Many of you would have noted over the past seven days that we have recorded only one new case. This does not mean, however, that we can return to business as usual. In fact, I encourage you to be extremely vigilant, as our vulnerability for imported cases is heightened given the current situation in the countries around us.  In the last 24 hours, Brazil recorded 30,830 new cases and 1,127 deaths; Suriname now has ninety positive cases with eight new cases in the last 24 hours and in neighboring Venezuela, there are 58 new cases”, Dr. Hamilton said.

According to Dr. Hamilton, once the guidelines are followed, there will be the limiting of transmission and flattening of the curve making Guyana’s return to normalcy sooner than later.

“We continue to encourage all Guyanese to utilize the services available to you and call the hotline; make contact with the health facility nearest to you or visit one of the COVID-19 facilities if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 or if you have been in contact with someone who tested positive”.

Guyana recorded its first case of COVID-19 back in March.
