Cricketer turns self in for Orange walk shooting

Local cricketer Carlyle Barton who plays for the Demerara Cricket Club turned himself into Police on Sunday afternoon after being identified as the person who shot Durban Street resident Shawn Nelson to the head on Sunday morning in Orange Walk, Bourda.

Family members said Barton and Nelson are known to each other and they are baffled over the incident. Reports suggest that the shooting may have been accidental as the young cricketer exited his vehicle to show off a gun he had in his possession unaware that the gun was loaded.

The weapon reportedly went off as he pointed it towards Nelson and “bluffed” him. The shocked cricketer jumped into his vehicle and sped away from the scene leaving a bleeding Nelson on the roadside.

He crashed the white Toyota car he was driving with license plate number PKK 2030 a number of times before abandoning the vehicle in the North Ruimveldt area.

The 39-year-old shooting victim, Shawn Nelson remains in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Hospital. Relatives have been told his chances of survival are very slim.

Doctors have explained to relatives that the man was shot at close range and fragments from the bullet are scattered around his brain. He has remained in an unconscious state since being taken to the hospital.
