Crime figures continue to climb. 98 murders so far

The Guyana Police Force continues to see a rising number of criminal offences being committed across the country and the figures continue to worry the top brass of the Force.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Force reported that an overall increase of 5% in serious crimes has been recorded at the end of September 2013 in comparison to the same period in 2012.
According to the Police, the total number of reports of serious crimes made between January 01 and September 31, 2013 was 2972 compared to 2832 for the same period in 2012. Some of the offences monitored are murder, robbery under arms, robbery with violence, larceny from the person, break and enter and larceny, burglary, rape and kidnapping.
And the murder figures also continue to rise. “A total of 98 murders were recorded at the end of September 2013. This figure matches the recorded number of murders for the same period in 2012. Of the 98 murders this year, 41 were of the disorderly type, 19 were committed during armed robberies, 2 were execution type, and 13 were domestic related, while the other 23 are so far undetermined”, the report stated.
The Guyana Police Force found that at the end of September 2013 robbery under arms overall, increased by 6%, with 798 reports compared to 751 for the same period in 2012.
The statistics indicate an increase of 12% in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms; and a 3% decrease in armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators, according to the Police.
Police Commissioner Leroy Brumell on Monday, promised to “take back the streets” from the criminals as he was confirmed in the position. The Police Commissioner has also said citizens need to protect themselves and their families more. He said he knows the road ahead will be tough but he is confident he will do well with the support of citzens.
