Crime reporter questions motive of police arrest for airgun pistol

Local crime reporter, Leroy “The Big” Smith, has been released by the Police, following his arrest over the presence of an airgun pistol, that he has since claimed ownership for.

The matter, however, is still under Police investigation.

In a statement, Smith said he found the arrest amusing and knows he will be vindicated when the investigation is complete.

“I observed an unmarked tinted pit-bull minibus trailing my vehicle along several parts of Georgetown prior to the being cornered by the said vehicle at Albert and regent Streets. Ranks who and I are familiar with each other disembarked, ordered me to pull to the corner and then took up tactical postures. My colleague and I were asked to step out of the vehicle as the rank indicated that they were in search illegal guns, ammunition, explosives and drugs. We immediately complied and were subjected to a search in full view of the public (thank God) along Regent Street”.

Smith claims that after the airgun pistol was found, he provided the documentation for it and immediately claimed ownership. Still, he noted,  the other occupant of the car was questioned about the airgun pistol and also taken into custody.

He said he is convinced that the search and arrest may have been sanctioned and orchestrated by a person or persons within the Guyana Police Force “who are uncomfortable with the manner in which I report the news; something I plan to continue doing without fear or favour”.

Air guns are usually used for hunting, pest control and recreational shooting but would have to receive police clearance for purchase.

Additionally, the guns are not to be carried 24hrs and would be licensed to only be used for the intended purpose. Air guns fire their pellets using compressed air.
