Popular Crime Reporter, 33-year-old, Leroy “The Big” Smith, was arrested by Police on Friday afternoon with a suspected air pistol in his possession.

A 19-year-old man from Linden, who was in his company, has also been taken into custody.

According to the Police, a party of policemen headed by Detective Sergeant George was conducting a stop and search exercise at Regent and Albert Streets, when motor car PVV 4965, was stopped and searched.

The reporter, Leroy Smith was the driver of the car, while the other youth was the only other occupant.

According to the Police, a Colt Defender 4.5 mm air pistol was found stashed in the compartment pocket between the two seats.

Smith claimed ownership of the weapon and produced an approval letter signed by former Commissioner Seelall Persaud and dated 6th January, 2017.

The two were arrested and taken into custody at Brickdam Police Station, where the firearm was lodged and an investigation launched into the discovery of the weapon.

Air guns are usually used for hunting, pest control and recreational shooting but would have to receive police clearance for purchase.

Additionally, the guns are not to be carried 24hrs and would be licensed to only be used for the intended purpose. Air guns fire their pellets using compressed air.
