Cummingsburg Accord negotiations cannot take place in the media -Lawrence

Chairman of the People’s National Congress, Health Minister Volda Lawrence today said the APNU will not be negotiating with the AFC in the media.

Lawrence who has been heading the APNU’s team in the Cummingsburg renegotiation talks told reporters this morning that issues are still being discussed and it would not be wise at this stage to bring those discussions in the press. She said the negotiations have been going well and the two sides have done well with the matters that they are examining.

The APNU and AFC are set to meet again on Monday and the AFC has already indicated that it will be the last meeting.

Lawrence said there are issues still being discussed and those discussions will continue.

“Well, I have read many articles, I have read articles where persons reported as though are part of the negotiating teams. I don’t know when they come to the meeting and when they leave but I have never seen them, but I have noted that persons have been reporting in that manner. But I say to you that negotiations are still taking place and it is a negotiation and at the end of the negotiations, both parties will be speaking on all the matters and I’m quite certain with the full media” Minister Lawrence added

The PNC Chairperson said she has been very guarded about the negotiations and believes that discussing too many issues related to it in the media could compromise the talks.

“You don’t negotiate in the press or in the public, you don’t do that, negotiation is based on trust and its based on confidentiality because its not we have four marbles, you take three and I take six, it’s a discussion and at the end of that discussion the parties responsible persons will come out to speak to whatever is agreed upon”.

Lawrence brushed aside claims that the two sides have already agreed on a Prime Ministerial Candidate, reiterating that she will not discuss the issues in the press as the negotiations are ongoing.
