CXC Exams delayed by two weeks

Registrar of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC)  Wayne Wesley on Wednesday announced that the 2021 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and the Caribbean Secondary Level Competency examinations will be delayed by two weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Guyana’s Ministry of Education has confirmed the development.

In a notice, the Education Ministry said that all examinations will be administered in their original format paper 1, 2 and paper 3/1 as well as SBA and for private candidates paper ,3/2.

The examinations which were slated to begin in mid-June will now commence on June 28 with the release of results slated for the last week in September to the first week in October.

“Regarding paper 2 topics released on Monday May 10, 2021, a review is being done with a view to offering more clarity. Results of said review will be released no later than Friday of this week,” the Education Ministry said.

Recently, UNICEF raised concerns about student’s and teacher’s preparation for the exams and had urged Caribbean Education Ministers as well as CXC to review the current model and simplified the exams.

CXC officials said the views by the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD), Ministers of Education, Permanent Secretaries and the Caribbean Union of Teachers as well as a number of students were considered before the decision to push back the exams was made.

CXC has also extended the deadline to May 31, 2021 for candidates to defer sitting exams and CSEC and CAPE candidates would now have until June 30, 2021 to submit them.
