Decline in fish catch being analyzed

The Government of Guyana with assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s local office and the Environmental Protection Agency have started a probe into the decline in the fish catch locally.

Local fishermen have been complaining about a sudden decline in their catch and the impact it continues to have on their livelihoods.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA are assisting with an analysis being done by the Agriculture Ministry to determine the reason behind the low catches.

The FAO Representative in Guyana, Dr. Gillian Smith has explained that the decline in catches was observed in previous years, long before the pandemic and the start of oil production offshore Guyana.

The official said there may be a myriad of issues that are contributing to the reduction in catch.

It has also been observed that the decline in catch being faced by fishermen locally is not unique to Guyana and a number of other countries are also reporting a similar situation.
