Police investigators in the East Bank Berbice area are probing the death of a 14-year-old girl and her 21-year-old boyfriend.

The two were found hanging side by side in the man’s Longsdale, Berbice home. The two have been identified as Deoraj Persaud and Sherriann Ali.

The teen who celebrated her 14th birthday last Thursday was reportedly pregnant. According to Police sources in Berbice, her pregnancy had been reported to Child Welfare services and was the subject of an ongoing investigation that would have led to criminal charges for the boyfriend.

The girl lived with adoptive parents but went missing late last night.  The bodies were discovered in the house earlier today.

Guyana continues to have one of the highest number of suicide cases in the region. There were 89 cases of suicide recorded last year.

A national suicide helpline was recently launched.
