DPP still to make decision on withdrawal of charges against Chief Election Officer; Case adjourned again

The Court Case against Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield in relation to allegations of fraud at the March elections has been delayed once again.

The case which stemmed from private criminal charges filed by a representative of the PPP and The New Movement Party is being prosecuted by their Attorney Glen Hanoman.

Hanoman requested more time today to file additional statements in the case.

Although he had claimed that he will be filing hundreds of statements in the matter, when the case was called today, he only filed three statements and requested a one month adjournment. The case will now continue in October.

The Attorneys for the Chief Election Officer are still awaiting the DPP’s response to their request for the matter to be withdrawn.

There was no representative from the DPP’s office in Court today and the DPP has not made any recent pronouncement regarding the matter.

The charges filed PPP Member Desmond Morian against the Chief Election Officer has been adjourned until October 26 when the trial is expected to commence.

The trial into the charge laid by The New Movement is expected to commence on October 27.

It was back in July, Lowenfield appeared before Magistrate McGusty to answer to three private criminal charges brought against him for alleged fraud and misconduct. He was not required to enter a plea to the charges and was released on $450,000 bail.

On advice of the DPP, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) launched a “comprehensive” investigation into the allegations of election fraud.

That investigation is still ongoing.
