Convicted drug trafficker Barry Dataram who served jail time in Guyana after being found guilty of drug trafficking is now facing the US authorities and possible additional drug trafficking charges.

Datatarm who completed his local prison sentence two years ago traveled to the US last Thursday and was arrested upon arrival.

The 45-year-old Guyanese man who also holds US citizenship was arrested on a number of existing warrants related to drug trafficking.

According to US Bureau of Prisons records, Dataram is being held at the Brooklyn Metro Detention Centre.

Fourteen years ago, the US issued an extradition request for Dataram. However, following several moves to the High Court, his extradition was blocked. In 2016, a local arrest warrant was issued for him in relation to drug trafficking. He was nabbed in Suriname and handed over to local authorities.

After he was convicted on the drug trafficking charges, he was sentenced to five years in jail.

Since being released, he kept a low profile and reportedly only recently got his US passport renewed and decided to make a trip to the US.

The US has not yet made public the indictments against him, but it is suspected that the indictments are linked to a number of various drug operations that originated in Guyana and are linked to similar operations in the US.
