A Guyanese woman who lives in East La Penitence was taken into the custody of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit after she was busted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport with just over 25 pounds of cocaine.

The bust took place early Thursday morning as the woman was preparing to board a New York bound Caribbean Airlines flight. She has been identified as Odessa Pollard.

According to a senior CANU official, the young woman was held after the agents searched her bags and discovered several Kerrygold milk powder packets with the cocaine inside.

She was immediately arrested and is being questioned. Investigators are convinced that a number of other persons may be linked to the attempt to ferry the cocaine out of Guyana.

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit has been stepping up its monitoring of passengers and has seen increased successes in drug busts.

Over the weekend, CANU arrested a Guyanese man preparing to travel to New York with cocaine in the false sides of his suitcases. He has since been charged.

The drug trafficking problem is a worrying one for local law enforcement, but they have been getting more help from international and US agencies.

Just recently, the US government indicated its willingness to loan several improved scanners to the airport security agents, to assist in the drug fight.
