Education Ministry and Peace Corps Guyana sign new agreement to support local education initiatives

The Ministry of Education on today signed a new seven-year agreement with Peace Corps Guyana to support education and learning across the country.

The new agreement, which has received the full support of the Government and the United States Embassy here, is being regarded as a “renewing of vows.

The US Peace Corps has been supporting several activities in Guyana since 1966 with more than 900 peace corps volunteers having served during those years.

This new agreement outlines the terms, details, requirement, and responsibilities in working together to achieve established goals under a new framework.

The agreement was signed by Minister of Education Nicolette Henry and Ms. Kury Cobham, Country Director of Peace Corps Guyana.

The MOU establishes support for NCERD’s pilot literacy project, NCERD’s education for a sustainable development project and the system-wide rollout of the revised health and family life education curriculum.

Cobham praised the decades’ old partnership between Guyana and the US Peace Corps and was particularly happy about this renewed partnership with the Ministry of Education.

Over the years the Peace Corps has had approximately 80 volunteers in the country each year, focused on a number of sectors including education, health and more recently, the environment.

She said at the end of each project, the framework is reviewed and updated and a new agreement is signed.

For this specific agreement, Peace Corps’ technical specialists traveled from Washington to Guyana to update and draft the new project framework which also saw the holding of a stakeholder meeting last year.

Under the new agreement, 37 trainees on the Essequibo Coast will undergo a 10-week intensive training to begin work when the new school year starts in September.

Minister Henry said she was very happy about the new agreement which seeks to strengthen the capability of Guyana’s education system

She said the Ministry is also pleased to compliment the work and activities of peace corps mission and vice versa.

The partnership is highly valued by the Government and people of Guyana, she said.

US Ambassador to Guyana Perry Holloway was present at the signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Education Brickdam Office.

While delivering brief remarks he pointed out that Peace Corps currently has 40 volunteers in Guyana with another 37 to be sworn in on August 15th.

He said the organisation forms an important part of the U.S Mission in Guyana, noting that many of the projects undertaken by the group help to address major challenges,  adding that the members of the Embassy and Peace Corps are always thrilled to be part those initiatives.
