Although the Mae’s School is privately operated, the Ministry of Education on Friday morning dispatched its mobile counseling unit with trained counselors to the Mae’s Private School to assist those students who may be affected after a teenage girl of the school took her own life.

Education Minister, Nicolette Henry and Chief Education Officer, Marcel Hudson also visited the school this morning and held discussions with the teachers and students.

The Chief Education Officer told the students and teachers that the Ministry shares in their loss.

He said “it is quite unfortunate that something of this nature would have happened, but I can tell you that the Minister said that we need to be here and therefore, the response to that request, we saw it as very important”.

The Mae’s school was thrown into mourning on Thursday following the death of the teenage student, who reportedly ingested a poisonous substance and confessed to a teacher about what she had done as she started to feel unwell while at school.

The school said the child was immediately rushed to the hospital and the teacher remained at her side as doctors battled to save her life. They eventually lost that battle.

Earlier yesterday, the girl reportedly handed out letters of apology to some of her friends at the school, but fell ill before they could have alerted the teachers that something might have gone wrong.

It was just two months ago that the Education Ministry launched its mobile counseling unit in an effort to provide better counseling and support services to students who may be facing depression and other issues.
