Education Ministry probing schoolyard fight between male and female student of Richard Ishmael Secondary

The Ministry of Education has launched an investigation into a schoolyard fight involving a male and female student of the Richard Ishmael Secondary School.

A video surfaced on social media today showing the male student punching and beating the female student during what appears to be a fight in the schoolyard.

Other students watched on without attempting to get involved and there are reports that the teachers were contacted long after.

It is unclear what triggered the attack, but it is under probe this evening.

The issue has surfaced at a time when there is focus on the elimination of violence against women and girls.

Education Minister Nicolette Henry today told reporters that the Welfare Division of the Ministry is already investigating the incident.

“Students fight, there is nothing unusual as you would know…you have gone to school and seen those, but it will be addressed by the welfare department. There is a standard operating procedure and they will effect that procedure and they have already began the process and they will address that”, she said.

There have been calls for issues related to gender-based violence to be taught more in schools.  Guyana has one of the highest percentages of incidents of violence against women and girls in this part of the world.
