Police are probing the brutal murder of a 78-year-old woman in the village of Hopetown on the West Coast of Berbice.
The body of Vaulda Britton was found in her home on Sunday.
At first relatives believed that she had died from natural causes, although they had concerns about bruises that were spotted on the body.
A post mortem examination revealed that the elderly woman was strangled to death. There are also reports that she may have been raped.
A relative of the woman has since been arrested and is expected to be charged.
The man who has been arrested was recently released from prison, was picked up by police after a child who lives in the same house recounted hearing the him threaten the elderly woman earlier in the day.
He is expected to be charged for the murder.
