Elections Day hiccups not widespread -GECOM

The Chairman and Chief Elections Officer of the Guyana Elections Commission on Monday midday sought to give assurances that the voting process was going well despite some hiccups at a few polling stations.

At three polling stations, the six digit stamp used to mark the ballot paper broke and had to be replaced.

The GECOM officials assured that the ballots which were cast with the broken stamp will be counted.

Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield said even the ballots with the number written onto them by the presiding officer will be counted. He said the Elections Commission has since replaced the damaged stamps. Very few persons were affected, Lowenfield assured.

The Chairman of the Elections Commission said GECOM feels cheated by the supplier of  the problematic stamps but he noted that there were just a few cases.

There have been reports about the late opening of some polling stations in areas outside of Georgetown. Those reports are being investigated but the Commission is confident that voters will not be disenfranchised.
