Electricity costs to go down by 10% from March -Pres. Ramotar

President Donald Ramotar has announced that the Guyana Power and Light Company will reduce the costs for electricity to consumers by 10% from March, 2015.

The President’s announcement came just two weeks after the government announced that it had asked the state owned power company to revisit its rates as the cost for oil tumbled on the international market.

On Monday morning, Mr. Ramotar told the commissioning ceremony for the new GPL power station at Vreed-en-Hoop that the reduction will take effect from the 1st March, 2015 and it will be across the board.

The President also called on Guyanese to do their part in ensuring a better service by helping GPL to cut back on its losses. He said GPL continues to face a major problem with persons stealing electricity and that has resulted in millions of dollars in losses.

Back in January, the government announced the lowering of fuel prices in Guyana to match the falling price for oil on the international market.

While the Guyana Power and Light Company will be instituting the new reductions, many customers continue to complain about the growing number of power outages in the city.
