Elisabeth Harper being considered for Diplomatic posting

Career diplomat and former Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Elisabeth Harper is among a number of persons being considered for diplomatic postings at Guyana’s various missions abroad.

Ms. Harper who resigned from her Director General post to become the Prime Ministerial Candidate of the People’s Progressive Party for the May 11 elections, has been keeping a low profile since the PPP lost the elections.

News Source has confirmed that she has been in talks with the new APNU+AFC government about a possible diplomatic role. Harper was also Guyana’s last Ambassador to CARICOM.

Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge on Monday today confirmed meeting with Harper but he refused to deny reports that she was being considered for an Ambassador post.

He was tight-lipped on Harper’s possible recruitment and that of several others as the government moves to restructure the Foreign Service.

Minister Greenidge admitted to personally engaging Harper a few weeks ago but he refused to reveal the details of their meeting.

The Foreign Affairs Minister would only say that a “variety of matters” were discussed including the border controversy between Guyana and Venezuela.

“I am neither denying nor concurring. Everyone is being considered,” he said as he dodged further questions on the issue.

He noted that by the end of August, his Ministry will announce who will represent Guyana’s interest as Ambassadors and High Commissioners in overseas territories.

He said some current Ambassadors might be retained.

Although, Elisabeth Harper found herself on the opposite side of the political campaign that eventually won the elections, she is well-respected within the coalition government and across the Caribbean as a seasoned Diplomat who has a wealth of experience on international matters. She spent more than 30 years in the Foreign service.

Following the May 11 elections, she turned down an offer from the PPP to take up a seat on the opposition side in the National Assembly.

She has repeatedly indicated that for her, Guyana comes first and she will always be willing to serve the country.  (Kurt Campbell)
