EPA grants approval for development of massive US$600M shore base facility at Vreed-en-Hoop

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has given the green light to the developers of the US$600 Million Port Vreed-en-Hoop project, NRG holdings Inc, to construct a massive shore base facility at Vreed-en-hoop on the West Bank of Demerara, the company has announced.

Businessmen Azruddin Mohamed, Andron Alphonso and Nicholas Deygoo-Boyer are listed as partners in the company which will be fully owned by a Guyanese consortium.

The facility, once completed, will boast an offshore terminal; dry dock facility; a fabrication yard; offshore components; umbilical preparation and spooling yard; administrative buildings to house offices and modernised logistics centers; warehousing; area for a helipad; a wharf, berths, and a dry dock and services which were previously being provided by Trinidadian companies in Trinidad will be carried out in Guyana.

The release quoted Mr. Boyer as saying that the facility will not only service the oil and gas industry, but will also cater to all sectors that require a port facility. 

“We aim for this project to be transformative, not only for the oil and gas sector, but also for the ordinary person on the street as we seek to reduce shipping costs with this new container terminal.”

With the issuance of the Environmental Permit, NRG Holdings Inc. will now have to submit an environmental and Social Management Plan to the EPA within four months. The Plan will outline the mitigation measures for any impact that the project will have within the proposed area and surrounding communities.

The permit also guides the hours of construction, as well as the authorization protocol for use of the land.

The company assured that it will contribute to local content development by providing opportunities for Guyanese in the oil and gas sector and will do so in a way that is responsible and sustainable and assured that communities surrounding the facility will benefit from its operations.
