Essequibo man dies from blows inflicted by wife during fight

A 45-year-old Essequibo man died on Tuesday, four days after he and his wife savagely beat on each other during a brawl at their Truli Island home.

Dead is Harrichand Mahadeo. His 46-year-old wife could now face manslaughter charges.

The fight between the couple took place on December 17, 2015 and they were both taken to the hospital with injuries. The woman was treated and sent away while the husband was admitted because of the seriousness of his injuries. However, he took his own discharge on Sunday.

On Monday, December 21, acting on legal advice, the police took both husband and wife before the court on attempted murder charges.  Mahadeo was charged with attempting to kill his wife and the 46-year-old wife, Gaitree Lakeram, was charged with attempting to kill him.

During the court appearance, they were placed on $100,000.00 bail each, but remained in custody as they were unable to raise the bail.

According to the Police, the husband, Harrichand Mahadeo later complained of feeling unwell and was taken to the Suddie Hospital where he passed away this morning.

 Further investigations are in progress.
