Essequibo students score 18 Grade Ones at CSEC

The Essequibo region is shining after pulling off several outstanding performances at this years Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations of the Caribbean Examinations Council.

Anna Regina student Zimeena Rasheed who wrote 20 subjects at the May/June Examinations gained 18 Grade Ones and Two Grade Twos. She was closely followed  by another Anna Regina Secondary School student Yogeeta Persaud who wrote 18 subjects and gained 18 Grade Ones. There were two Queens College students who gained 16 Grade Ones and several others who gained over 11 Grade Ones.

The Top positions were dominated by students of the Anna Regina Secondary School and Queens College. The Education Minister Priya Manickchand, traveled to the Cinderella County of Essequibo to deliver the more than fairy tale results. The Minister told a packed Auditorium of students, teachers and parents at the Anna Regina Secondary School that she thought it best to deliver the results from that Region because of the great success that students from the Region have gained at the examinations.

Minister Manickchand reported that Guyana has done very well overall at this years CSEC examinations. She told those gathered that 69 students from across the country gained 11 or more Grade Ones at the examinations. That’s an increase when compared to the 2012 results. The Education Ministry has also noted several increases in a number of subject areas with some subject areas recording a 100% pass rate nationally. There was a slight decline in the Mathematics subject area.

The Minister said “the analysis of the 2013 CSEC results revealed that the overall pass rate at the General and Technical proficiencies for Grade One to Three was 59.31% as opposed to 58.69% in 2012. The overall 2013 Grade One to Grade Four pass rate was 80.92%”

Just over 12,000 Guyanese students wrote the examinations.
