Ex husband charged for hotel murder

After telling Police Investigators that he was the one who stabbed his 30-year-old ex-wife to death, 34-year-old Vinod Balgobin face a City Magistrate on Friday morning to face murder charges. He was not required to enter a plea when he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Dressed in a red and white plaid shirt, the father of two was emotionless as the charges were read to him. Family members of the murdered woman gathered in the courtroom and also outside of the courthouse. Balgobin was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance on May 21, 2013.

The Prosecution’s case is that Balgobin accompanied his ex-wife to the K&VC Hotel on South Road, Georgetown last  Saturday night and the two got into a heated argument. Sometime between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, Balgobin allegedly stabbed the mother of his children to death. She received over 30 stab wounds and the knife was left stuck in her chest. She was also slashed across her stomach and to other parts of the body.

Balgobin went on the run after he allegedly committed the act but was nabbed in the Essequibo area on Wednesday. Relatives of the dead woman said the two shared a very abusive marriage but remained friends even after they decided to end the marriage.
