The Guyana Police Force is looking to continue to build trust in communities across the country and the Minister of Public Security would like to see that trust built to a level where members of the communities would assist in weeding out criminals.

At a media briefing on Monday, Minister Khemraj Ramjattan said in many cases, many persons are well aware of the criminal activities being carried out in the communities by their own relatives and friends. He said in most cases, most choose to remain quiet.

He wants to see that silence changed and is hoping that Guyana grows into a society where persons turn in their family and friends who may be involved in crime.

The Public Security Minister referenced the recent shoot-out between Police and members of a cattle rustling gang in Berbice. Two of the suspects were shot dead and four others have since been arrested.

Ramjattan is convinced that the relatives of the men must have known what was taking place.

He said if someone sees an unemployed friend or family member wearing expensive clothes and jewellery and making big purchases, it should raise alarms and the Police should be called in to probe.

Community Policing Groups in Guyana are celebrating another anniversary and a call has been issued for more persons to get involved in the voluntary movement that has aided in the capture of several criminals and continue to support the Police with tackling their duties.
