Family seeks Inquest over death of drunk-driving prisoner in Suddie Police lock-ups

Family members of the late Lallbachan Bachan are seeking an inquest to be carried out into the death of the man in the Suddie Police station lock-ups on the night of June 30.

The family, through their Attorney Anil Nandlall, has written to the Police Commissioner, the Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority and the Director of Public Prosecutions about their request.

Bachan was arrested and taken into custody two days before he died. The arrest was made for a number of outstanding warrants for drunk driving.

He remained in the Police lock-ups despite complaining of feeling unwell at times.

In the letter requesting the inquest, Attorney Nandlall indicated that the family is in possession of photographs of the man’s lifeless body. The photos were taken at the morgue and reportedly showed several marks of violence about the man’s body.

Family members say those marks were not there before.

The Attorney has also indicated that he is in receipt of information that the Police officers who were on duty on the same night that the man died, were spotted drinking alcohol at the Police station.

He said he is willing to offer whatever assistance that might be needed as part of the probe.

A post-mortem examination found that the man died from injuries to the neck, which according to the Police, could have been sustained from a fall.

The matter remains under probe.
