A recent statement by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton, in Canada where he accused the PPP government of widespread discrimination against Afro- Guyanese is now being met with a response from Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh.

Mr. Norton during a recent radio interview in Canada said persons of all ethnic groups perceived to be supporters of the Opposition are being discriminated against, but he noted that Afro- Guyanese are facing the brunt of the discrimination.

Norton explained during the interview that while the government has moved to repossess lands given to Afro-Guyanese along the Linden/Soesdyke highway which were issued after the 2018 No-confidence motion, their Indo-Guyanese counterpart are not being harassed to give up their lands.

But the Finance Minister over the weekend, said that the Opposition Leader’s claim his unfounded.  Dr. Singh said the continued cries of discrimination by the Opposition is because the party has no counter policies for the PPP administration’s policies.

“You are witnessing a recourse with the use of ethnic card to incite hostility and to create tensions and create hostility among our Guyanese brothers and sisters,” the Finance Minister said.

The Finance Minister said that the PPP government’s policies are fashioned in such a way that leaves little room for discrimination. He made mention of the COVID-19 relief grant and the Because We Care school grant which he said benefited everyone across ethnic lines.

“And that programme was rolled out across all ten regions of the country. In every region, in every town in every municipality, even village, every street, every household, where is the discrimination here,” the Finance Minister questioned.

According to the Finance Minister, the government will not fall victim to constant claims of discrimination when it is making a genuine effort to create a good life for all Guyanese. Just recently, Dr. Singh also fired off at Chartered Accountant Nigel Hinds and his concerns about alleged acts of discrimination by the Government.
