Almost a month after a fire gutted a section of a building that housed the Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility, the Guyana Fire Service is still to release the official findings of its investigations.
A preliminary report was completed, but Fire Chief Kalamadeen Edoo today told News Source that the Fire Service is awaiting a report from the Government Electrical Inspectorate to wrap up its investigations.
He said once that report is handed in, the Fire Service will be able to release its official findings as early as next week.
The preliminary report was dispatched to the Police Force and the Minister of Home Affairs. News Source understands that the preliminary report found that the fire was electrical in origin and is linked to old wiring that was in the building.
During the investigation by the Fire Service, it was found that the fire originated in a section of the building that housed living quarters for members of the Police Force who are based at the Police headquarters.
A number of the Police ranks were questioned during the investigations.
At the scene of the fire, the Minister of Home Affairs sought to link the fire to anti-government political activists outside of Guyana.
The Government attempted to do the same when another fire gutted the Brickdam Police station two months before.
However, based on the Police Force’s own investigations, a disgruntled prisoner with no known political connections was charged with setting that fire. The man has denied that he started the blaze.
