Fire Service confirms that fire at Police HQ was electrical in origin

Nine months after a fire gutted a section of the Police Headquarters Annex at Eve Leary, destroying part of a building that housed the Office of Professional Responsibility, the Guyana Fire Service has finally revealed that an electrical issue in the wooden building was the cause of the blaze.

In a statement on Friday, the Guyana Fire Service said that based on the fire pattern, evidence gathered, eye witnesses, and scene examination, the fire was ruled as electrical in origin.

The release of the findings of the probe was delayed on several occasions and was only released on Friday following questions from News Source Guyana.

When the fire struck the section of the Police headquarters last November, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn blamed the blaze on arson although there was no evidence to support his claim. He had also claimed that the fire had been triggered by the words of political opponents and political activists abroad.

The Fire Service continues to remind homeowners and business owners to be vigilant on the issue of overloading electrical circuits and to turn off electrical appliances when not in use.
