Fire suspected to be electrical in origin destroys Lamaha Gardens house

The Guyana Fire Service was praised for its quick response to a fire in Lamaha Gardens this morning. The fire was contained to the one house but the inside of the house was completely gutted.

The house is owned by businessman Noel Shewjattan of Auto Fashion. He was not at home at the time of the fire.

A housekeeper was the only person at home when the fire started in one of the bedrooms. The woman reportedly pulled down the main electrical switch of the house before bolting out as the fire ripped through the room and quickly crisscrossed its way to the other areas in the house.

It is suspected that the fire was electrical in origin.

The Fire Service arrived moments after and quickly doused the blaze as the firemen were able to access a fire hydrant nearby.

The sister of the homeowner said that the house was occupied by two persons who were not at home at the time. She confirmed that the housekeeper was downstairs at the time of the fire started on the upper flat.

The Divisional Fire Officer for Operations, Gregory Wickham said the top floor of the house and its contents were completely destroyed.

“When we arrived, we noticed that the top floor of the structure was fully engulfed in flames and so we went into operations. Further, we received information that the maid was in the building at the time of the fire. She was on the lower floor and she heard a booming sound coming from the top floor. When she got upstairs to investigate, she saw fire coming from one of the rooms.”

Wickham, said that the work of the firefighters was made easier due to the access to a nearby hydrant.

“Kudos to GWI for allowing us to access the hydrant and getting the water out of it. So that’s a good point. We weren’t hindered at all by the firefighting process because of lack of water, we had enough water to keep the fire under control”

The Guyana Fire service has launched an investigation into the blaze.
