Fish shop owner to press ahead with charges against girlfriend over arson of business place

The owner of the popular White Castle Fish Shop, Jermaine Langevine is still trying to understand his girlfriend’s decision to set his business place ablaze, but he intends to pursue criminal charges against her.

The woman remains in Police custody two days after setting fire to the Hadfield Street business place. She reportedly doused the inside of the bottom flat with gasoline and set it on fire early Saturday morning after she was unable to locate Langevine.

Today, the shaken businessman said he has no choice but to pursue charges and allow those charges to move forward, pointing out that “she doesn’t care about anyone and never put a nail in this business”.  He said the woman reportedly became upset because she could not locate him and calls to his phone went unanswered.

A staff member was forced to push her out of the building when she set it ablaze. The business place remained closed today, but Langevine said he is hoping to open a temporary operation in the nearby Hadfield Street Avenue within days, once he gets approval from the City Council.

He said many of his staffers will have to remain home until that time. Today insurance officials were at the business place assessing the damage. It is estimated that overall damages stand at over $15 million. Furniture, equipment and electrical appliances including large freezers and coolers were all completely destroyed.

Langevine said the White Castle Fish Shop is part of the Guyanese culture and it is not going any place.
