The government has announced that it intends to push ahead with criminally investigating several officials of the former People’s Progressive Party government who were involved in the hosting of World Cup Cricket here and the granting and acquisition of lands at Sparendaam, referred to as Pradoville 2.

The two forensic audits were recently reviewed by Cabinet which led the government to support the need for criminal investigations based on the findings.

State Minister Joseph Harmon told media operatives on Friday that in both cases the government felt that there were indications of criminal culpability.

As such the administration will be looking to put together a Special Prosecutors Team to help the Guyana Police Force with its investigation, Harmon said.

He Explained that such a team will not be limited to local personnel only but will likely include experts from the region and further abroad.

“We intend to bring persons who are capable of handling these matters,” he added.

Already the audit reports have been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department.

Harmon said the police will have to decide whether the Special Organised Crime Unit will continue the investigation or it will be done by the CID.

He believes, however, that the investigation should be led by members of the Criminal Investigation Department.

In the Pradoville #2 land investigation, Harmon said it was discovered that several acres of prime real estate land, in Sparendaam, were acquired at prices far lower than prevailing market prices.

These lands in the gated community were obtained by National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL) and sold to certain members and associates of the previous government.

He said the evaluations were also unusual for the location and it is believed that members of the previous administration gifted themselves the land.
