Foreign Ministry to probe reports of Ambassador to Kuwait being a US Convict

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched a probe into reports that recently appointed Guyana Ambassador to Kuwait, Dr. Shamir Ally, may have been convicted in the United States in 2003 for the dissemination of false financial information by the Acrodyne Communications, Inc. (“Acrodyne”) in press releases and Commission filings in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Two other persons were convicted for the same offence in relation to the same company.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs may have been unaware of the conviction and the fine that was imposed against Ally, when it went ahead with the appointment.

Speaking to members of the media on Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Minister, Carl Greenidge, said he has seen the media reports on the issue and a probe has been launched. He said based on that probe, he will make a recommendation to the Cabinet.

“I have seen one of the publications and we are investigating, trying to establish the veracity and in determining the seriousness of the conviction. Due diligence was exercised. Dr. Ally was also a member of Go-Invest and he has been on a number of boards and bodies in Guyana over the years”, the Foreign Minister said.

He explained that in the United States getting information from various states on various issues may vary, but once the probe is complete, he will offer a recommendation to the Cabinet on the appointment.

Dr. Ally recently attended an orientation exercise hosted by the Foreign Ministry. If the reports of the US conviction are verified, there is a possibility that he could be recalled from the post.
